Wow. These past 24 hours have seen the Brussels bombing, the death of Rob Ford, got word late last night that my grandmoter passed away (really sucks because I barely knew her, I haven't seen her since I was 12 years old, but am conflicted because I don't feel anything?) and now one of my favourite artists: Phife Dawg, the 5 footer from A Tribe Called Quest.
Cause of death hasn't been given, but Phife has been battling type 1 diabetes since the early 90s.
They were the first rap group I ever heard of.
The first rap group who's songs I made a point to remember and the first rap group I tried to dress like.
They were the first rap group that got me thinking about the kind of person I wanted to be and made me watch the words I used. Because words have power.
Even though I almost died a few years ago from heart failure, it still takes some getting used to the reality that as you get older...death becomes more of an inevitability. You're reminded more of your mortality more than ever.
R.I.P Phife, you're with the most high now.
